The Gentle Healing Art of Reiki
Reiki is.... a gentle yet powerful system of energy-based healing established in Japan in the 1920's by Mikao Usui following his enlightenment on Mt. Kurama. A very spiritual and religious man, Usui Sensei developed guidelines for all Reiki practitioners to develop a spiritual awareness which suports the healing practice for channelling this wisdom guided energy known as Reiki. As a non-invasive healing technique for stress reduction, Reiki facilitates deep relaxation allowing the body to heal from within as it seeks balance and homeostasis.
Reiki is......an invitation to harmony by helping you balance yourself entire system: physical, emotional, mental and spiritual regardless of your age or state of health. Reiki is for everyone and can never do any harm.
Reiki is..... a spiritual practice and a professional wellness practice that
protects the health we have, restores us to better health by relieving the
effects of stress on our bodies and helps transform our ability to live happier, more productive and peaceful lives.
Reiki is…..the primal energy of the Universe being guided by the highest
wisdom of the Universe.*
*As defined by William Rand, president of the International Center for Reiki Training
What does the word "Reiki" mean?
The Reiki kanji is made up of 2 Japanese ideograms.
The top figure is “rei” represents the guiding
source which is the highest wisdom of the
The bottom figure is “ki”. represents the life energy of the universe.
Dr. Usui gave Reiki it’s name. It refers to Soul Energy.
The practice of Reiki involves channeling this spiritually guided life force energy which has its own innate intelligence. Reiki energy is pure and cannot be manipulated by humans.
How does it work?
Reiki is perceived by the human body as a very fine, highly subtle, vibrational frequency to which Reiki practitioners have been attuned. This energy works at a cellular level to facilitate balance and homeostasis within the human biofield.
Reiki is drawn in by the recipient and flows to where it is needed. Toxins usually deposited around the large joints, in the lymph glands and in the head are loosened as deep relaxation facilitated by Reiki energy enables the body to naturally eliminate these substances.
Reiki is cumulative. The more often received, the more it benefits. There are no contraindications. Reiki can never do any harm. It is safe in all situations with babies, children, adults and animals.
A Brief History of Reiki
Today's Reiki dates from the early 20th century in Japan. Dr. Mikao Usui, a Zen Buddhist and a life long spiritual aspirant, had a profound revelation on sacred Mount Kurama on the 21st day of a fast.
Dr. Usui became aware that a power to heal and empower others to heal had been awakened in him. He created a system for Reiki healing practice and initiated over 2,000 students into 1st degree Reiki practice. Dr. Usui traveled and taught Reiki throughout Japan from 1922 until his death in 1926.
One senior shihan student, Dr. Chujiro Hayashi, opened a clinic in Toyko with Usui’s blessing in 1925. In the early 1930's a Hawaiian born woman, Mrs. Hawayo Takata, received Reiki treatment and healing from a severe illness at Hayashi Sensei's clinic in Toyko. She became a student of Hayashi’s and brought the knowledge of Reiki back to Hawaii in 1937. She received her Reiki Master from Hayashi Sensei in 1938. Mrs. Takata initiated 22 masters before her death in 1980. It is from her teachings that Reiki spread through the United States, Canada and to Europe and Africa.
Today, Reiki is practiced worldwide. Reiki services are provided locally at Northern Westchester Hospital, major NYC metropolitan hospitals and some 800 other hospitals across the USA.

As a school occupational therapist, I witness the effects stress has on kids.
